When to Seek Window Shades Repair — and When to Start Fresh
Custom window shades and blinds represent significant investments of your time and money. One of the benefits of premium shading solutions is that instead of throwing them away, once you notice damage, you should quickly consider repairing yours.
Some damage is indeed irreversible, but you might be pleasantly surprised to learn that we can fix a variety of common issues with window shades, shutters, or blinds.
If you’re unsure whether it’s time to revamp or replace a window treatment in the greater Baltimore area, our experts at Alexander Blank Fabrics & Design can tell you if your window coverings have renewal potential or need replacement. We don’t pressure anyone to make another investment when a repair will suffice.
But how can you tell what’s worth fixing?
When Window Shades Repair Is the Right Move
A repair makes sense when the damage is mechanical rather than structural. A broken cord, a stuck lift mechanism, or surface issues like a fabric stain are potentially fixable problems that don't downgrade the shade's overall integrity.
Sending your Venetian blinds for repair can extend the life of this classic treatment. Slat replacements, broken tilt mechanisms, and frayed ladder tapes are all common fixes that cost far less than a complete replacement.
If the fabric is in solid condition, the mounting hardware is sound, and the style still works for the space, we might just recommend repairs.
The key question is whether the shade or blind still has good bones. These problems are generally worth addressing before they get worse:
- Cords that are fraying, knotted, or snapping during operation
- Shades that won't lift smoothly or keep slipping down
- Broken or bent slats on Venetian or horizontal blinds
- Loose or detached mounting hardware
- Roman shade rings or fabric tabs pulling away from the panel
- Minor fabric snags or edge fraying that hasn't spread
If you bring these repairs to us early, the process will be more straightforward and less expensive. For instance, a minor mechanical issue can eventually damage the surrounding treatment, turning an easy fix into a full replacement.
Your Warranty May Already Cover It
Before spending anything out of pocket, it's worth checking whether your window treatments are still under manufacturer warranty. Hunter Douglas products, for example, come with a Lifetime Limited Warranty for the original retail purchaser that covers defects in materials, workmanship, and failure to operate — including all internal mechanisms, components, brackets, and fabric delamination.
A few specifics worth knowing:
- Operational cords are covered for 7 years from purchase
- Motorization components are covered for 5 years from purchase
- Repairs and replacements are made with like or similar parts
That said, the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, sun damage or fading, water exposure, misuse, or failure to follow care instructions — which is why understanding why your shades are failing matters just as much as knowing what broke.
We install Hunter Douglas products and back our installations for the first two years. After that period, we're still happy to help — service calls start at $125 per trip.
For Hunter Douglas products not originally purchased from us, we encourage you to bring them into our showroom. Depending on the repair needed, age, and lifting system, many fixes can be completed in our workroom in 5–10 business days starting at $85. Products requiring factory-level service are sent back to Hunter Douglas (typically 3–4 weeks), with a minimum handling charge of $50 plus any applicable shipping and Hunter Douglas fees.
Signs It's Time for New Window Treatments
Sometimes, repairs aren’t worth considering. These signs are telling you that it might be time to move on.
- The fabric is significantly faded, stained, or worn through
- The shade no longer fits the window after a remodel or frame replacement
- The style feels dated and no longer suits the room's design
- Repeated repairs haven't held, and the same issues keep returning
- You're losing heat or light control because the shade no longer works as it should
- The treatment is an older model with discontinued parts
If one or more of the above describe your shutters, blinds, or shades, replacement is likely the better choice. And if you're ready to see what's possible,we can show you a wide range of contemporary styles worth considering.
