Are Drapes Supposed to Touch the Floor?

Alexander Blank Fabrics • August 17, 2026

Custom drapery are the perfect frame to your window, but with the endless amount of options available, sometimes the number of choices one needs to make can make the design process feel unclear.

Custom drapery in varying lengths from the floor.

People who come to Alexander Blank Fabrics & Design for custom drapery consultations often ask common questions like “Should my drapery touch the floor?” Drapery length is a key detail, and they want to get it right.

The truth is there's no single right answer, since the best length depends on the room, the fabric, and personal preference. In our consultations, we are happy to help dive into your design, but if you’re still learning about the options, we provide deep dives into curtain length.

Comparing Curtains and Drapes

We get why people think curtains and drapes are the same thing, but there are major differences:

  • Curtains are usually lightweight and typically hang above the windowsill or apron rather than reaching the floor. They’re typically seen in spaces with higher or smaller windows, like kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Drapes are generally heavier and are associated with a more formal look. While they're often made from materials such as velvet, silk, or jacquard, they can just as easily be made from cotton or linen. We see drapery more often in dining rooms, bedrooms, and family rooms.

Both can be lined for fullness and insulation. And since both curtain and drapery panels can be stationary or movable, both options can serve functional and decorative purposes, depending on your preference.

Compared to curtains, drapes extend much closer to the floor and benefit from a finished, tailored hem.

Do Curtains Need to Touch the Floor?

No. Curtains usually hang at or just below the windoe.

Drapes look most finished when they meet the floor or come close to it. That said, "touching the floor" isn't one fixed measurement. It covers a small range of finishes, each with its own personality. The three most common are kissing, floating, and puddling.

Length of Drapes From Floor: Floating

Floating drapes hang roughly half an inch to an inch and a half above the floor, a fine middle ground that doesn’t come up too short. This length works well in rooms where drapes are opened and closed often, like a home office or sunroom, since the fabric won't keep catching on the floor.

Drapes Kissing the Floor

This tighter hem sits about half an inch above the floor, which creates the cleanest, most buttoned-up finish. Designers lean on this length in modern or minimalist spaces where crisp lines matter most. It also holds up well in busy living rooms and anywhere else with kids or pets — because the fabric stays clear of foot traffic and won't drag in dust along the bottom edge. If you want a tailored, low-maintenance finish, this is a smart place to start.

Puddling Drapery On Floor

Puddling happens when extra fabric pools onto the floor, anywhere from a couple of inches to even as long as a foot or more, depending on how dramatic you want the effect. We recommend this look for formal living rooms, elegant dining rooms, or luxe maximalist bedrooms, where the panels remain stationary. Puddling adds softness and old-world elegance, though it requires more fabric and extra care. The pooled section collects dust more quickly and needs regular steaming or vacuuming.

How to Choose the Right Drape Length for Your Room

This process begins with focusing on the room’s purpose, whether you want the drapery to be stationary or movable, and the fabric weight. Ask yourself:

  • Is the room's decor casual or more formal?
  • Do I want a low-maintenance design?
  • Will the drapes be opened and closed often, or left mostly in one position?
  • Is the room high-traffic, with kids or pets?
  • How much natural light do I want the room to get?
  • What fabric weight do I want?

Getting it right involves more than a tape measure — it takes an eye for how the fabric will move, fold, and settle once it's installed on the window.
