The best way to keep your blinds and shades clean is to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating. You should include cleaning your window coverings when you vacuum or dust your home or once every one or two weeks. If you stay on top of this maintenance, you’ll only need to deep clean your blinds twice a year.
How to Clean Hunter Douglas Blinds
You don’t need any complicated supplies to clean Hunter Douglas blinds. Gather a few clean microfiber cloths, a vacuum with a soft brush attachment, and a bowl of water and dish soap if you’re cleaning EverWood® Faux Wood Blinds or Modern Precious Metals® Mini Blinds. If your faux wood or metal blinds have stubborn fingerprints or other spots, wipe the slats with a cloth lightly dampened in the soap and water mixture. If you’re cleaning Parkland® Wood Blinds, avoid using water, and finish by wiping each slat with some furniture polish or lemon oil. Vertical blinds require the same cleaning supplies as horizontal styles. When you clean vertical blinds, wipe downward to avoid disconnecting the vane from the track.
Cleaning Hunter Douglas Shades
Cellular shades have delicate pleats that you must handle with care. We recommend using a soft brush attachment and low suction on your vacuum to remove dust from side to side. If spots are left behind after vacuuming, blot them using a cloth dampened in water and mild detergent. Avoid rubbing the shade, as this can cause it to pill or lose shape.
Silhouette® Sheer Shades are treated using a process that repels dust and stains, so maintaining their appearance is straightforward. There are a few options for cleaning sheer shades:
- Use a feather duster or microfiber cloth to wipe dust away gently.
- Use a vacuum with a brush or crevice attachment on the lowest suction setting.
- Blow dirt off with compressed air or a hair dryer in a cool setting.
- You can spot clean sheer shades using a damp cloth or sponge; add mild soap to the water for stubborn stains.
Since Provenance® Woven Wood Shades are made with grasses and bamboo, you must not snag them during cleaning. Vacuum your woven wood shades with a brush attachment on low suction once weekly or more often if needed. You can spot clean these shades with a damp cloth, but be careful not to saturate them, as this can affect the integrity of the organic material. If you notice a sticky spot or fingerprint, clean it as quickly as possible so it doesn’t discolor the shade.
Vacuum Roman shades while supporting the fabric from behind to help prevent wrinkles or creasing. Blot stains with warm water and mild soap, and dry the area immediately with a clean microfiber cloth to avoid water marks. Some fabrics, like silk, require professional cleaning.
